Recommendations in Napier

Attractions

Marine Parade: Luckily you’ll get to enjoy this beautiful stretch of coastline during your entire stay! Also, right across the street from the apartment is the National Aquarium of New Zealand. Our favorites are the penguins (don’t miss the daily feedings!) and the ‘underwater’ walkway. There’s a trail all along the seafront with beautiful places to visit along the way, especially the viewing platform (a long dock out into the water), the sunken gardens and seawall murals.

Art Deco: Napier is the Art Deco Capital of the world and there are some great tours and shops celebrating this.

Downtown/Central Business District (CBD): There are many shops, restaurants and cafes to explore here. Especially on Emerson street which is pedestrian-friendly. Also the public library and the MTG (Museum, Theatre, Gallery) which are both free and always have interesting exhibits.

Ahuriri: Cute little neighborhood a short drive away with great shopping and dining. There’s also a boardwalk and beach that’s safe for swimming and seawall murals for great pictures.

Napier Urban Farmer’s Market: Every Saturday, 8.30am – 12.30pm

Creative Arts Napier: Everchanging, gorgeous exhibitions and art for sale from local artists.

Napier Botanical Gardens: Floral oasis in the heart of the city.

Food

Vinci’s: This is our favorite pizza place in Napier; everything is so yummy. And you can order by the (large) slice.

Japanese Sushi Aozora: Small place in Ahuriri, family-owned and the real deal. Everything is fresh and authentic and they have some unique and vegetarian combos that are great.

Gelato2U: Just a short walk down on Marine Parade, this seaside ice cream shop is the absolute best!

Puāwai Coffee: Right around the corner and absolutely delicious coffee. Cute plans and ambiance as well as really kind service.

Drink

Mission Estate Winery: The oldest winery in New Zealand (founded in 1851) and considered the birthplace of NZ Wines. They are world-renowned and have a cellar door with amazing views. We are a fan of their full range, especially the Gaia Project Rosé and their Late Harvest Desert wine.

Church Road Winery: Right down the road from Mission Estate with different but equally gorgeous views. World-famous and award-winning wines; love the One series. Also, the food here is delicious!
